Baby names in 2024: would you name your baby after your ex?

My feed has been full of the most popular names of 2023 over the past few weeks, and it got me thinking about the baby name drama’s I’ve heard over the years.

After a poll on my stories this week, a massive 82% of you said that you kept your baby’s name a secret until after they were born. I must admit that we were exactly the same and kept Ruben’s name from everyone, even our closest family members. So much so, we still have a potential girl name ready for next time and we both continue to keep it a secret (just in case). If any of you are teachers reading this blog, you’ll know how hard it is to find names that neither of you have associations with.

Baby asleep with names written all around them.
Finding the perfect name can be such a head ache.

Then you’ve also got the whole ‘name-napping’ saga of “you stole my name”. Please DM me and let me know if you’ve had your baby name stolen after you’d shared it with friends/family. I’d love to know how you dealt with this and what you did about it.

Now, when it comes to choosing your baby’s name, a lot of pressure can fall onto your shoulders, i.e. will it suit them, will the family be happy, will we offend anyone, will it sound odd in 70 years time, etc. However, I have to say the oddest choice of name I have ever come across was someone choosing one of their ex’s names. I mean, would you name your child after an ex? To me that’s just plain weird.

Are you considering a seasonal name, are you going traditional, does your family have a theme to their names or a specific letter you use? Reach out on Instagram and let me know what you do or plan to do in your family (and don’t worry, I won’t share any names you are thinking of).

Names are such a wonderful thing that parents give so much thought and attention to, and let’s face it… it’s a pretty permanent feature of a person. I’d love to know your thoughts on this blog and how you plan to choose your baby’s name.

As always, lots of love xx
